At this time when so many of our servicemen and woman are overseas, in harm’s way, it seemed to me especially important to ensure that our War Memorials are maintained and treated with the respect that they deserve. So, I’m very pleased that having pointed out that Bishops Lydeard War Memorial and its setting were looking a little sorry for themselves, the Parish Council has taken up the task and overseen a programme of improvements.
The overgrown vegetation around the memorial garden has been cut back and the scruffy old tarmac surface has been replaced with crushed stone. Cracks in the memorial itself have been repaired and chips replaced. Next week, a new ‘Diamond Jubilee’ gate will be installed setting the garden apart from the school grounds, and all in time for Remembrance Sunday. Let’s see as many of the village residents paying their respects as possible this year.
