Mike Slams Taunton Deane’s Recycling Policy

Conservative-controlled Taunton Deane Borough Council, as part of Somerset Waste Partnership, has drastically reduced the opening hours of the Borough’s Household Waste Recycling Centres (HWRCs), closing on some days and with shortened times on others.  Charges have been introduced at all the HWRCs.  Mike, who has worked extensively in the waste industry called the plans a recipe for fly-tipping.  “Far from supporting recycling efforts as the Deane Conservatives claim on their website, they are undermining the long-established principle of free waste disposal for local households”, claimed Mike Rigby, Independent candidate for the Lydeard Ward. “Not only will the lack of availability and increased cost of disposal facilities inevitably lead to an increase in fly-tipping, it will encourage residents to simply add those materials that they previously separated and brought to HWRCs, to their wheelie bins for free disposal.  We’ll see the average weight of wheelie bins increase”, said Mike.  “And as the Council is charged by the weight of waste, their ( and our) costs will go up.  So not only is the Deane Conservatives’ plan environmental madness it is also economicallly illiterate,”  Mike continued.  The only way to change this is to get the Conservatives out of Deane House and, in Bishops Lydeard, that means voting Independent.
